Have you not watched that show? I mean, I guess spend time studying for the GMAT if your future is really that important to you, but the whole series is on Netflix, y\u2019know, so maybe your future isn\u2019t even worth it. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kidding, of course it is. Great show, though. <\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anyway, this student has flatlined at the low 600s, so I was curious about his studying habits. He works hard. Studies pretty much daily. Has worked through much of the OG and several of our books. Reviews his practice tests thoroughly. All of it sounded great, but I was suspicious. It sounded <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">too<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> good. Like in the episode of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Breaking Bad <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">when Walt finds out\u2014<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sorry, sorry. Won\u2019t spoil it. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, I pulled up a problem on my computer and told him to work through it. He couldn\u2019t do it. He got totally lost. I asked him if the problem looked familiar. He said, \u201cYes, I think so, I feel like I\u2019ve seen it before, or one like it.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I told him, \u201cYou\u2019ve definitely seen it before. Do you know how I know?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHow?\u201d He asked. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBecause it\u2019s from one of your practice tests.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I saw the shame wash over him. He knew he was caught. I stared at him with that look that combines confusion and disappointment, the one I know so well on my father\u2019s face. I told him I wasn\u2019t mad, just disappointed, and said, \u201cHow can you miss a problem you\u2019ve done before?\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alright, I\u2019m exaggerating a little. I wasn\u2019t <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> disappointed, but I did ask that question. Since then I\u2019ve repeated the exercise with all my students, and without fail, they miss the same questions they\u2019ve missed in the past, which brings me to where I am today, writing this blog post, asking you studiers a very simple question:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WHAT IN THE FESTERING PILE OF FETID PINK PIGLET SPIT ARE YOU DOING?!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/giphy.com\/embed\/rEKMO9OWtXjZS\" width=\"480\" height=\"270\" frameBorder=\"0\" class=\"giphy-embed\" allowFullScreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/giphy.com\/gifs\/rEKMO9OWtXjZS\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I know what you\u2019re <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> doing: redoing GMAT problems enough. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019ll ask you another of the questions I asked these students: \u201cHow can you possibly expect to get <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">new<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> problems on these topics right if you can\u2019t get right the ones you\u2019ve already seen, done, and reviewed?\u201d I mean, if you\u2019ve read an explanation on how to do a problem, and then can\u2019t do that problem 3 weeks later, all that time was time utterly wasted. You might as well have watched <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Breaking Bad<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Review problems you miss and problems that take too long. Often. You don\u2019t like this, do you? My students don\u2019t either. Their retort is always a variation of, \u201cBut then I won\u2019t learn new things!\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WHO CARES?! YOU\u2019RE NOT LEARNING OLD THINGS!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I would rather you do one problem and be able to do it again than ten problems and miss them later. In the first you\u2019ve at least demonstrably made progress.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019m worried that then I\u2019ll just get good at doing problems I\u2019ve seen before.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WHO CARES?! WOULD YOU RATHER BE BAD AT DOING PROBLEMS YOU\u2019VE SEEN BEFORE?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How is that better? <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019ve learned <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nothing<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> if you continue to miss problems you missed before. How will you recognize the same topic when it is tweaked and tested in a slightly different way in a different problem if you <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">don\u2019t even recognize it in the one you\u2019ve already reviewed?<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So when you miss a problem, how should you handle it? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First, mark your error log, as you definitely, absolutely have already been doing. Write down the question, your mistake(s) on that questions, and the big GMAT lesson(s) to take away. Then, in a fourth column, jot down some redo date<\/span><b>s<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Yes. Date<\/span><b>s<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Plural. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first date is soon, a day or two later. The problem will be fresh in your mind, but you\u2019ll still probably have to think to make the logical connections. If you get it right, then re-do it 7 to 10 days later. This will give you more time to forget. If you get it right after that, redo it <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">again<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 2 to 3 weeks. If at any point you get the problem wrong or take longer than three minutes, you start the redo process over. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And in the downtime, watch some <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Breaking Bad<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
