Blame constant access to Excel and the calculator on my phone\u2026but I\u2019m completely over doing math on paper.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you give me a problem that\u2019s going to require half a page of calculations\u2026well, I\u2019m not going to want to do that problem. But on the GMAT Quant section, I don\u2019t get a calculator, so how can I still get a 99<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> percentile score while staying true to my lazy-math desires?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s do some Fast Math!<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<h4><b>Principle #1: Don\u2019t Do Math till You HAVE to<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sure, write down that equation in the question stem. And, sure, set up the math that you would need to do. BUT. If any of the math looks annoying, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">don\u2019t do it yet<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Be patient. Wait a little longer to see whether you really need to do it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For instance, I want you to tell me what <sup>5<\/sup>\u2044<sub>12 <\/sub>of 81 is. Oh, and then I want you to multiply that result by 240.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><sup>5<\/sup>\u2044<sub>12<\/sub> of 81\u2026hmm. 81 isn\u2019t divisible by 12\u2026but the two numbers do share 3 as a factor, so I can at least simplify a bit and then maybe I\u2019ll need to do some longhand multiplication and division\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stop right there. On the GMAT, if I\u2019m doing longhand multiplication or division, I\u2019ve missed something. Back up. Look at the whole problem.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">full<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> math that I asked you to do:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 13.3333px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-19585\" src=\"https:\/\/www.manhattanprep.com\/gmat\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2017\/04\/fast-math-part-1-image-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"91\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That 81 can\u2019t completely cancel out the 12\u2026but the 240 can! Check it out:<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 13.3333px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-19586\" src=\"https:\/\/www.manhattanprep.com\/gmat\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2017\/04\/fast-math-part-1-image-2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"112\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Now, let\u2019s see, 5 times 81\u2026<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wait! When multiplying a string of numbers, always look to pair 5\u2019s and 2\u2019s first. Why? 5\u2019s and 2\u2019s create 10\u2019s (or multiples of) and those are a whole lot easier to multiply into the rest of the numbers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(5)(20) = 100<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(100)(81) = 8,100<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Done!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whenever you\u2019ve got a multi-step math problem, try to set up as much as you reasonably can and look to simplify before you even think about solving.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Next, when you can\u2019t simplify any further, don\u2019t just do the remaining math left to right.
