{"id":6874,"date":"2013-12-23T14:16:56","date_gmt":"2013-12-23T19:16:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.manhattangmat.com\/blog\/?p=6874"},"modified":"2019-09-05T16:05:36","modified_gmt":"2019-09-05T16:05:36","slug":"the-4-math-strategies-everyone-must-master-part-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.manhattanprep.com\/gmat\/blog\/the-4-math-strategies-everyone-must-master-part-1\/","title":{"rendered":"The 4 Math Strategies Everyone Must Master, Part 1"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We need to know a lot of different facts, rules, formulas, and techniques for the Quant portion of the test, but there are 4 math strategies that can be used over and over again, across any type of math\u2014algebra, geometry, word problems, and so on.<\/p>\n<p>Do you know what they are?<\/p>\n<p>Try this GMATPrep\u00ae problem and then we\u2019ll talk about the first of the 4 math strategies.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>*If <em>mv<\/em> < <em>pv<\/em> < 0, is <em>v<\/em> > 0?<\/p>\n<p>(1) <em>m<\/em> < <em>p<\/em><\/p>\n<p>(2) <em>m<\/em> < 0<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>All set?<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>How did you do the problem? Most Quant questions have more than one possible approach and this one is no exception\u2014but I want to use this problem to talk about a particular technique called <em>Testing Cases<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>This question is called a \u201ctheory\u201d question: there are just variables, no real numbers, and the answer depends on some characteristic of a category of numbers, not a specific number or set of numbers. When we have these kinds of questions, we can use theory to solve\u2014but that can get very confusing very quickly. Instead, try testing real numbers to \u201cprove\u201d the theory to yourself.<\/p>\n<p>(Note: I chose a particularly tough question for this exercise; testing cases can also be useful and fast on easier questions!)<\/p>\n<p>This problem gives one inequality:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;mv<\/em> < <em>pv<\/em> < 0\"<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The test writers are hoping that you\u2019ll say, \u201cOh, let\u2019s just divide by <em>v<\/em> to get rid of it, so the equation is really <em>m<\/em> < <em>p<\/em> < 0.\u201d But that\u2019s a trap! Why?\n\nWhen you divide an inequality by a negative, you have to flip the signs. But you don\u2019t know whether <em>v<\/em> is positive or negative, so you don\u2019t know whether to flip the signs! Never divide an inequality by a variable if you don\u2019t know the sign of the variable.<\/p>\n<p>The question itself contains a clue (two, actually!) pointing to this trap. The given inequality asks about \u201c< 0\u201d and the question also asks whether <em>v<\/em> > 0? <em>Less than zero<\/em> and <em>greater than zero<\/em> are code for \u201cI\u2019m testing you on positives and negatives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So, we can\u2019t actually simplify that annoying inequality. Things are going to get a little messy, but can you figure anything out to start? Glance at that starting inequality for a second: what <em>can\u2019t<\/em> the value be? None of the variables can be 0, or the inequality <em>mv<\/em>\u00a0<\u00a0<em>pv<\/em>\u00a0< 0\u00a0would be false.\n\nDo you want to start with statement 1 or statement 2? Since I\u2019m writing this, I get to choose (I want to start with statement 2), but there isn\u2019t one right answer to that question. Start wherever you want!\n\n\n<blockquote>\u201c(2) <em>m<\/em> < 0\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Hmm, <em>m<\/em> is negative. Call that -1. Then <em>v<\/em> could be -1\u2026 oh, wait, no,\u00a0<em>v<\/em> can\u2019t be negative. Then <em>mv<\/em> would be positive but <em>mv<\/em> is supposed to be less than 0. And I already said <em>v<\/em> can\u2019t be 0. If <em>m<\/em> is negative, then the only way to make <em>mv<\/em> negative is to make<em> v<\/em> positive. Cool!<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve just proven the theory to myself by using a concrete number: I want <em>mv<\/em> to be negative. A negative times a positive equals a negative. If <em>m<\/em> is negative, then<em> v<\/em> has to be positive.<\/p>\n<p>Statement 2 is sufficient. Therefore, <em>v <\/em>is greater than zero; the statement is sufficient.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The correct answer is (D).<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As I mentioned earlier, the Testing Cases strategy can be used to make the work faster on lots of easier problems as well. In the case of these annoying theory questions, Testing Cases can really save us by making it (somewhat) easier to figure out what\u2019s going on with the theory.<\/p>\n<p>For Strategy #2, I\u2019m going to send you to an article I wrote a long time ago: <a id=\"bloglink\" href=\"\/\/www.manhattanprep.com\/gmat\/blog\/2012\/06\/12\/how-to-turn-algebra-into-arithmetic\/\" target=\"_blank\">How to Turn Algebra into Arithmetic<\/a>. (We officially call this strategy <em>Choose Smart Numbers<\/em>.)<\/p>\n<p>This classic Problem Solving (PS) strategy has been around since the beginning of time (well, Standardized Test Time, anyway). It will work only on Problem Solving questions, not Data Sufficiency, but it is based on a similar principle: pick some real numbers to turn annoying algebra\/variables\/abstract math into a much more concrete problem.<\/p>\n<p>One main difference exists between the two strategies discussed so far. When choosing smart numbers, you will only have to test <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">one<\/span> set of numbers in the problem. When testing cases on theory problems, you will almost certainly have to test <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">multiple<\/span> sets of numbers (as we did in the problem above).<\/p>\n<p>Okay, begin! I\u2019ll start you out with a couple of easier ones from OG13. Note: always learn new techniques on easier problems first! You might not even choose to use the special technique on this problem during the real test, but that\u2019s the point: you&#8217;ll learn <em>how<\/em> to use the technique more easily when you already understand how the textbook math works.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left; padding-left: 30px;\">Test Cases: PS #32, PS #44, DS #1, DS #7<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left; padding-left: 30px;\">Choose Smart Numbers: PS #34, PS #38<\/p>\n<p>Start thinking about how to recognize when you can use these strategies (how do you know?), and then practice them in different scenarios and across different content categories.
