The name is French for &#8220;the daily bread.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/\/manhattanprep.com\/gre\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/19\/2010\/12\/lepain.gif\" alt=\"\" title=\"lepain\" width=\"159\" height=\"204\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1490\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In English, <a href=\"\/\/dictionary.reference.com\/browse\/quotidian\">quotidian<\/a> (note the different spelling) means &#8220;daily, everyday, commonplace&#8221; and can have the negative connotation of &#8220;mundane, unexceptional.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Choose your own answer to this GRE Antonyms problem before clicking &#8220;more.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>QUOTIDIAN :<br \/>\nA. diurnal<br \/>\nB. matutinal<br \/>\nC. sporadic<br \/>\nD. pedestrian<br \/>\nE. maudlin<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>There are a couple of possibilities for the opposite of <a href=\"\/\/dictionary.reference.com\/browse\/quotidian\">quotidian<\/a> &#8212; the word we write on our paper might be something like &#8220;extraordinary, unusual&#8221; or something like &#8220;fresh, exciting, original&#8221; or something like &#8220;not happening every day, irregular.&#8221;  As it turns out, it&#8217;s this last meaning that is used in this problem &#8212; the answer is C, sporadic, which means &#8220;occurring at irregular intervals.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Note that <a href=\"\/\/www.thefreedictionary.com\/pedestrian\">pedestrian<\/a> is a synonym trap!  <A HREF=\"\/\/www.thefreedictionary.com\/diurnal\">Diurnal<\/A> can also mean daily, or can mean, literally, &#8220;happening during the daytime (as opposed to the nighttime).&#8221;  It is not typically used in the sense of &#8220;ordinary.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Incidentally, <A HREF=\"\/\/www.thefreedictionary.com\/matutinal\">matutinal<\/A> means &#8220;happening in the morning,&#8221; and <A HREF=\"\/\/www.thefreedictionary.com\/maudlin\">maudlin<\/A> means &#8220;tearfully sentimenal,&#8221; like a lot of pretty bad movies marketed to middle-aged women.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If you live in New York, Los Angeles, or any of 24 other cities in 19 different countries, you may be familiar with the cafe chain Le Pain Quotidien.
