Colloquially, we sometimes say that someone is &#8220;flip-flopping.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Not wanting to lose supporters, the politician <em>equivocated<\/em> on the issue, tossing out buzzwords related to each side while also claiming more study was needed.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Related Words:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"\/\/dictionary.reference.com\/browse\/ambivalent\">Ambivalent<\/a> (uncertain; unable to decide, or wanting to do two contradictory things at once)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"\/\/dictionary.reference.com\/browse\/vacillate\">Vacillate<\/a> and <a href=\"\/\/dictionary.reference.com\/browse\/waffle\">Waffle<\/a> (waver, be indecisive)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"\/\/dictionary.reference.com\/browse\/dither\">Dither<\/a> (act irresolutely)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"\/\/dictionary.reference.com\/browse\/hedge\">Hedge<\/a> (avoid commitment by leaving provisions for withdrawal or changing one&#8217;s mind; protect a bet by also betting on the other side)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"\/\/dictionary.reference.com\/browse\/palter\">Palter<\/a> (talk insincerely; bargain or haggle)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"\/\/dictionary.reference.com\/browse\/tergiversate\">Tergiversate<\/a> (repeatedly change one&#8217;s opinions, equivocate)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Equivocate<\/em> contains the roots &#8220;equi&#8221; and &#8220;voc&#8221; \u201c think of it as being equally vocal\u009d for two or more positions.<\/p>\n<p><i>Photo of blog author balancing on the equator at Mitad del Mundo, Ecuador.
