{"id":2104,"date":"2011-06-02T08:46:12","date_gmt":"2011-06-02T13:46:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.manhattangre.com\/blog\/?p=2104"},"modified":"2019-08-30T16:49:27","modified_gmt":"2019-08-30T16:49:27","slug":"popvocab-vocabulary-at-the-nail-salon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.manhattanprep.com\/gre\/blog\/popvocab-vocabulary-at-the-nail-salon\/","title":{"rendered":"PopVocab: Vocabulary at the Nail Salon"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Here&#8217;s something a <a href=\"\/\/dictionary.reference.com\/browse\/prodigious\">prodigious<\/a> <a href=\"\/\/dictionary.reference.com\/browse\/lexicon\">lexicon<\/a> is good for &#8212; naming nail polish colors when you&#8217;ve got 55 shades of &#8220;pink.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>If you are <a href=\"\/\/dictionary.reference.com\/browse\/wont\">wont<\/a> to frequent nail salons, you may have noticed that many of the color names involve puns (and often are not terribly descriptive of the color they <a href=\"\/\/dictionary.reference.com\/browse\/purport\">purport<\/a> to represent): Tart Deco, Lapis of Luxury, Pinking Up the Pieces, and my favorite &#8230; Sand of a Beach.<\/p>\n<p>A few color names, however &#8212; currently in the Essie line &#8212; sport more <a href=\"\/\/dictionary.reference.com\/browse\/erudite\">erudite<\/a> names containing GRE vocabulary words:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/\/cdn.manhattanprep.com\/gre\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/19\/2000\/product_thumb-2.php_.png\" alt=\"\" title=\"product_thumb-2.php\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2106\" \/><br \/>\n<em>Demure Vixen<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/\/dictionary.reference.com\/browse\/demure\">Demure<\/a> means &#8220;characterized by shyness and modesty; reserved.&#8221; Culturally, <i>demure<\/i> is almost always used to describe women. A word that also means &#8220;reserved&#8221; and is often used to describe men is <A HREF=\"\/\/dictionary.reference.com\/browse\/staid\">staid<\/A>.<\/p>\n<p>Interestingly, <i>demure<\/i> can also mean &#8220;affectedly or coyly decorous, sober, or sedate&#8221; &#8212; that is, <i>faking<\/i> being shy and reserved as a flirtation strategy. That makes more sense when paired with <A HREF=\"\/\/dictionary.reference.com\/browse\/vixen\">vixen<\/A>, a female fox or what the dictionary describes as &#8220;an ill-tempered or quarrelsome woman,&#8221; a usage that has since fallen out of fashion. <i>Vixen<\/i> is often used in a fashion and pop culture context to describe a <i>femme fatale<\/i> or <a href=\"\/\/dictionary.reference.com\/browse\/audacious\">audaciously<\/a> appealing woman.
