In topology, a donut and a coffee cup with a handle are equivalent shapes, because each has a single hole.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;ve ever heard this word before, it might be in the context of a <i>topographical map<\/i>, which shows surface features such as mountain ranges, glaciers, and valleys.<\/p>\n<p><A HREF=\"\/\/damnyouautocorrect.com\/683\/mall-parking-can-be-soooo-palingenesis\/\">This post<\/A> introduced a similarly obscure word from theology:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/\/manhattanprep.com\/gre\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/19\/2011\/07\/18.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"18\" width=\"320\" height=\"480\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2154\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.manhattanprep.com\/gre\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/19\/2011\/07\/18.jpg 320w, https:\/\/www.manhattanprep.com\/gre\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/19\/2011\/07\/18-200x300.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 320px) 100vw, 320px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/\/www.thefreedictionary.com\/palingenesis\">Palingenesis<\/a> has a couple of definitions:<\/p>\n<p><em>Theology: The doctrine of transmigration of souls; spiritual rebirth through metempsychosis of Christian baptism<\/p>\n<p>Biology: The repetition by a single organism of various stages in the evolution of its species during embryonic development.<br \/>\n<\/em><br \/>\nThis all makes sense if you know that <i>palin<\/i> is a Greek root meaning &#8220;again,&#8221; and <i>genesis<\/i>, of course, means birth or creation.<\/p>\n<p>The root <i>palin<\/i> (not sure if there&#8217;s a connection to the former governor of Alaska) also occurs in <a href=\"\/\/www.thefreedictionary.com\/palindrome\">palindrome<\/a>, a word that can be read the same way forwards or backwards (Mom! Dad! Wow!) and <a href=\"\/\/www.thefreedictionary.com\/palimpsest\">palimpsest<\/a>, parchment from which earlier writing has been removed to clear it for new writing.<\/p>\n<p><small>Manhattan Prep&#8217;s blog is written by one of our real-live GRE instructors.
