So while it might sound bad to be &#8220;naive,&#8221; the word &#8220;ingenue&#8221; is often used positively to refer to the new &#8220;it girl&#8221; in the movies.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/\/www.thefreedictionary.com\/ingenue\">Ingenue<\/a> is related to two other words that are much more likely to appear on the GRE &#8212; <em>ingenuous<\/em> and its antonym, <em>disingenuous<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/\/www.thefreedictionary.com\/ingenuous\">Ingenuous<\/a> means &#8220;lacking in cunning, guile, or worldliness; artless,&#8221; or &#8220;openly straightforward or frank; candid.&#8221; (You can just memorize that inGENUous means GENUine &#8212; that&#8217;s a pretty good trick, right?) That is, <em>ingenuousness<\/em> is good when you want someone to be honest with you, but it&#8217;s a terrible quality for your lawyer to have &#8212; you need him or her to be crafty and cunning.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/\/www.thefreedictionary.com\/disingenuous\">Disingenuous<\/a> means &#8220;not straightforward or candid; insincere or calculating&#8221; &#8212; in other words, <em>not genuine<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><A HREF=\"\/\/www.modcloth.com\/Womens\/Dresses\/-Set-a-President-Dress\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/\/www.manhattanprep.com\/gre\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/19\/2011\/07\/president-300x186.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"president\" width=\"300\" height=\"186\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2224\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.manhattanprep.com\/gre\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/19\/2011\/07\/president-300x186.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.manhattanprep.com\/gre\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/19\/2011\/07\/president.jpg 812w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/A><br \/>\n<A HREF=\"\/\/www.modcloth.com\/Womens\/Dresses\/-Set-a-President-Dress\">Set a President Dress<\/A><\/p>\n<p>This play on words references the expression &#8220;set a <em>precedent<\/em>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><em>Precedent<\/em> shares a root with <em>precede<\/em>, &#8220;to come before.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"\/\/www.thefreedictionary.com\/precedent\">precedent<\/a> is &#8220;an act or instance that may be used as an example in dealing with subsequent similar instances.&#8221; For instance:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Eleanor Roosevelt <i>set a precedent<\/i> for First Ladies&#8217; publicly leading substantial projects rather than merely hosting dinner parties and quietly supporting uncontroversial charities.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><A HREF=\"\/\/www.modcloth.com\/ModCloth%2FWomens%2FDresses\/-Lily-putian-Loveliness-Dress\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/\/www.manhattanprep.com\/gre\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/19\/2011\/07\/lily-putian-300x191.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"lily-putian\" width=\"300\" height=\"191\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.manhattanprep.com\/gre\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/19\/2011\/07\/lily-putian-300x191.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.manhattanprep.com\/gre\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/19\/2011\/07\/lily-putian.jpg 795w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/A><br \/>\n<A HREF=\"\/\/www.modcloth.com\/ModCloth%2FWomens%2FDresses\/-Lily-putian-Loveliness-Dress\">Lily-putian Loveliness Dress<\/A><\/p>\n<p>Ha!
