A <a href=\"\/\/dictionary.reference.com\/browse\/sensualist\">sensualist<\/a> is a person given to indulging the senses and appetites.<\/p>\n<p>There are many more words expressing similar ideas, but with notable differences.  For instance, an <a href=\"\/\/dictionary.reference.com\/browse\/oenophile\">oenophile<\/a> is a connoisseur of wines, but a <a href=\"\/\/dictionary.reference.com\/browse\/carouser\">carouser<\/a> is a drunk.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/\/dictionary.reference.com\/browse\/epicure\">Epicure<\/a>, <a href=\"\/\/dictionary.reference.com\/browse\/epicurean\">epicurean<\/a>, <a href=\"\/\/dictionary.reference.com\/browse\/gastronome\">gastronome<\/a>, and <a href=\"\/\/dictionary.reference.com\/browse\/gourmand\">gourmand<\/a> all mean &#8220;lover of fine food and wine.&#8221;  A <a href=\"\/\/dictionary.reference.com\/browse\/glutton\">glutton<\/a> is a person who eats too much.<\/p>\n<p>These words have negative connotations:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/\/dictionary.reference.com\/browse\/debauchee\">Debauchee<\/a> &#8211; a <em>debauched<\/em> person, &#8220;addicted to excessive indulgence in sensual pleasures&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/\/dictionary.reference.com\/browse\/lecher\">Lecher<\/a> &#8211; as one GRE student put it, &#8220;It means perv.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/\/dictionary.reference.com\/browse\/libertine\">Libertine<\/a> &#8211; a person who is morally or sexually unrestrained<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/\/dictionary.reference.com\/browse\/rake\">Rake<\/a> &#8211; &#8220;a dissolute or profligate person, esp. a man who is licentious&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>And finally, <a href=\"\/\/dictionary.reference.com\/browse\/wanton\">wanton<\/a>, <a href=\"\/\/dictionary.reference.com\/browse\/bacchanalian\">bacchanalian<\/a>, and <a href=\"\/\/dictionary.reference.com\/browse\/dionysian\">dionysian<\/a> are related adjectives.<\/p>\n<p><em>Wanton<\/em> has the sense of totally letting yourself go, which makes it a nice word for the covers of romance novels, but it can also pop up in the sense of &#8220;wanton violence&#8221; or &#8220;wanton disregard for human life.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The GRE instructor hesitated when asked what <em>bacchanalian<\/em> means: there is not a dictionary definition in the world that doesn&#8217;t contain the word &#8220;orgiastic.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>You wouldn&#8217;t believe what that guy suggested on the first date &#8212; and before we&#8217;d even gotten our appetizer.  When I reminded him of the place&#8217;s &#8220;No Shirt, No Shoes, No Service&#8221; policy, he rolled his eyes and suggested the same thing to our waitress.  What a <em>rake<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>It took months before she came up with the perfect name for her burlesque-themed Asian broth company: <em>Wanton Soup<\/em>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Welcome to Visual Dictionary, a series of posts about words that are better expressed in pictures.
