{"id":8067,"date":"2015-02-23T18:35:24","date_gmt":"2015-02-23T18:35:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.manhattanprep.com\/gre\/?p=7592"},"modified":"2019-08-30T16:42:56","modified_gmt":"2019-08-30T16:42:56","slug":"text-completion-sentence-equivalence-little-grammar-world-good-part-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.manhattanprep.com\/gre\/blog\/text-completion-sentence-equivalence-little-grammar-world-good-part-3\/","title":{"rendered":"Text Completion and Sentence Equivalence: A Little Grammar Does a World of Good (Part 3)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-7596\" src=\"\/\/www.manhattanprep.com\/gre\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/19\/2015\/02\/2-19-grammar-ptiii-2.png\" alt=\"2-19-Grammar-PtIII-2\" width=\"375\" height=\"375\" \/>In a way, the environmental movement can still be said to be _________ movement, for while it has been around for decades, only recently has it become a serious organization associated with political parties and platforms.<\/p>\n<p>The above sentence is a SE example from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.manhattanprep.com\/gre\/store\/item\/5-pound-book-gre-practice-problems\/\" target=\"_blank\">5Lb Book of GRE Practice Problems<\/a>, #89.\u00a0 Today\u2019s discussion explores a third element of sentence structure that is easily overlooked \u2013 pronouns!\u00a0 They can greatly help you clarify the meaning of a sentence.\u00a0 (And if you didn\u2019t notice already, do you see what I did in the previous sentence?\u00a0 <em>They<\/em> \u2013 did this pronoun catch your eye?)<\/p>\n<p>The challenge with pronouns isn\u2019t that they are difficult to address, it\u2019s that they are nearly invisible to us, because we have spent our entire adult lives ignoring them when we read and speak.\u00a0 As a test, how many pronouns have I used just in this short paragraph?<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s one way I want you to \u2018see\u2019 the earlier SE example:<\/p>\n<p>In a way, the environmental movement can still be said to be ________ movement, for while <strong><em>it<\/em><\/strong> has been around for decades, only recently has <strong><em>it<\/em><\/strong> become a serious organization associated with political parties and platforms.<\/p>\n<p>Stop mid-sentence, and address those \u2018it\u2019s.\u00a0 This mental exercise is not about finding the target, clues, and pivots, although you should be aware a pronoun could certainly be the target.\u00a0 This is about making sure you understand the sentence.\u00a0 Mentally, you should read the sentence as<br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>In a way, the environmental movement can still be said to be ________ movement, for while (the environmental movement) has been around for decades, only recently has (the environmental movement) become a serious organization associated with political parties and platforms.<\/p>\n<p>Try this one!\u00a0 (From the GRE 5Lb Book of Practice Problems, Chapter 4 #86)<\/p>\n<p><em>The Thin Blue Line<\/em>, a documentary by Errol Morris, is one of a very few movies that has had a tangible effect on the real world; the film managed to ________ its subject, who had been on death row for a crime that Morris proves, fairly definitively, that the man did not commit.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>exculpate<\/li>\n<li>liberate<\/li>\n<li>inter<\/li>\n<li>excuse<\/li>\n<li>manumit<\/li>\n<li>vindicate<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>In this example, we see a pronoun target \u2013 \u201cit\u2019s subject\u201d \u2013 that we should mentally define as the film\u2019s subject.\u00a0 This is also a call back to my previous two posts on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.manhattanprep.com\/gre\/blog\/2015\/02\/09\/text-completion-sentence-equivalence-little-grammar-world-good-part-1\/\">core sentence<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.manhattanprep.com\/gre\/blog\/2015\/02\/17\/gre-text-completion-sentence-equivalence-little-grammar-world-good-part-2\/\">descriptors<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>So we have a core sentence \u2013 the film managed to (do something to) its subject.\u00a0 It also has a descriptor: \u2018who had been \u2026\u2019<\/p>\n<p>So we need to choose a word that reflects something a film could do, and that incorporates the descriptor of someone on death row that Morris proves did not commit the crime.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExculpate\u201d and \u201cvindicate\u201d are a pair, as are \u201cliberate\u201d and \u201cmanumit\u201d.\u00a0 Both pairs make sense with the descriptor (clue) of a man wrongfully convicted.\u00a0 Now which pair best fits the core sentence?\u00a0 Which pair best fits the idea of something a film could do?\u00a0 For me, exculpate and vindicate both contain an idea of changing opinion, while liberate and manumit both contain an idea of tangible effect \u2013 physically freeing an individual from prison.\u00a0 The changing opinion better fits the context of what the film itself could do.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In a way, the environmental movement can still be said to be _________ movement, for while it has been around for decades, only recently has it become a serious organization associated with political parties and platforms.
