SCORED 550 (Q 43 V 23) AWA 4.5 - Q&V Help

by sphinxoduss Sat Oct 10, 2009 8:38 am

Dear MGMAT instructor

I am an Comp Engg graduate (2004 Batch) and not happy with dream shattering score. After 5 years of continuous talking to my office PC, I felt that my basics have gone rusty. Therefore, to improve my basics in Quants as well as in Verbal, I took the following approach during my 25 days of official leave:

MGMAT Strategy Guides - Quants
MGMAT SC Guide
OG 11
CR Bible
3 MGMAT tests
3 GMATPrep tests

I gave myself 25 days to complete all the above material, although time seemed to be less.

I took my test on day 1 (GMATPrep) and scored a 570. At this moment, I knew that I lag in Basic Maths (Number Properties ate up most of my time & Probability Scared me to death) and CR & SC required a thorough brush up.

Other tests (taken in 2 days gap) revolved around below mentioned scores

MGMAT Test 1 - 630 (Q42 V34) Could not complete last 2 Quants
MGMAT Test 2 - 640 (Q43 V34)
MGMAT Test 3 - 640 (Q48 V30) CR dropped
GMATPrep 2 - 600 (Q45 V25)
GMATPrep 3 - 600 (Q46 V27)

I tried to take all the tests round about the scheduled time of my Actual GMAT appointment, so that I could tune my brain&body to the actual time of my test.

Although, the scores mentioned were low enough to encourage test postponement, I somehow felt that the scores did not reflect my true potential. Therefore, I decided to take test.

=============In the Actual Test ===============
Completed AWA on time, although committed a silly grammatical error in ISSUE essay.
Quantitative - Fell short of time and guessed on the last 2 questions.
Verbal - Fell short of time and guessed on the last one.
=======================================================

When I look back, I feel that I tried to eat the full turkey in one go. I tried to complete things and although I knew the concepts I could not gather confidence due to lack of adequate practice.

I am planning to go thru the CR book once more whereas practice more quants this time. I am also planning to read another book on SC, TurboCharge Series of MGMAT.

Could you pls suggest me an approach to improve my CR and SC ?
Pls suggest me anything which could help me to plan my studies and increase my score to reach a 700+.

Thanks
S

hi - this post is in the wrong folder; i'll move it to the correct one.

this is an awfully general question. it's hard to give a meaningful response to a question that covers so much territory, but here are a couple of hints:

* try not to concentrate too much on the specifics of any one question, especially in CR. instead, try to get GENERAL TAKEAWAYS from each problem. for more on what i mean about that, see here: http://www.beatthegmat.com/gmat-prep-pl ... html#52813

* try going through the problems (and responses) on these forums, if you haven't already.

good luck!

by the way, MGMAT does not publish anything called "TurboCharge Series". you may want to check that material; it's not ours.
