Re: Mission critical modifier SC

Hi, I see C wrong for maybe another reason, I'd like to see if I am mistaken. The defeat of the Spanish Armada, which stymied the Armada’s plans to meet up with the Duke of Parma’s army off the coast of Flanders in the Spanish Netherlands, was not only due to gale winds that favored the British but ...

Re: MGMAT sc guide- chapter 11 in action problem#3-meaning pg217

This is a tricky issue. Most English speakers would probably be able to select the right form without understanding the grammar behind it. Suppose Robert left my house an hour ago to go to the market. I could say: If Robert took street A, it would take him 5 minutes to get to the store. If Robert t...

is this a possible error in one of the flash cards provided?

this was on one of the gmat flash cards I found on this website rikita was late to pick up her cat from the vet after abandoning... i thought perhaps it should have been written "rikita was late picking up her cat" . to me, the infinite "to pick" makes it sound like rikita was la...

Re: Parallelism

Do we need to have same tenses in parallel structures? Let's say - If the sentence has a structure - X ,and Y Do X and Y need to have to have the same tense? i'd also like clarification on this. I've read in several posts and have seen in some OG questions errors when different tenses are used in a...

Re: individuals who have been blind from birth

"Research has shown that when speaking, individuals..." the part of the sentence makes sense, but the comma threw me off. Is the comma there because of the subordinating conjunction "when"? as i understand it, normally the reporting verb "show" is followed by a that-cla...

Re: Blaming its recent troubles on a widening recession

* found the answer to my first question, my last question is on how the experts properly read that in answer choice A the intended parallelism is not "announced" and "expected". Since it's a 1-part parallel marker "and", we have flexibility in choosing the segments that...

infinitive of purpose questions

These questions are based on reading Chapter 13 Advanced strategy. (1). The building was demolished TO AVOID falling down accidentally [incorrect] (2). The building was demolished TO KEEP IT from falling down accidentally [correct] mgmat guide states that the subject of the main verb is the implied ...

Re: SC:is descended or has descended ?

i don't think the problem is with that phrase. two other elements of that answer choice are problematic: * "has suggested" --> this is the present perfect, which is used to look back on past events that have some sort of relation to the present situation. so, "has suggested" would sig...

Re: SC - Affording strategic proximity to the Strait of Gibralta

The OG explanation for this answer is really confusing. it mentions "for a past condition, the subordinate clause introduced by if uses the past indicative, and the main clause uses the conditional if x happened, then y would happen " the weird thing is, answer choice (B) doesn't have a co...

Re: The first detailed study of magpie attacks in Australia

Hi Ron, Just watched your video about a new approach/ verb tenses. the part about drilling a particular grammar discipline over and over has really helped me. with that said, during the video i was reading choice E and thought perhaps verb tenses might be enough to eliminate it The first detailed st...

Re: The first detailed study of magpie attacks in Australia

Another question based on Ron's response that the prepositional modifier by the time they reached adulthood is ambiguous. i simply placed answer choice E into the sentence for easy reference and added a bolded comma The first detailed study of magpie attacks in Australia indicates that 98 percent of...

Re: SC - Affording strategic proximity to the Strait of Gibralta

dave -- you have the right elements of understanding in your post, but you are conflating two things that are actually separate. specifically, (a) the conditional use of would and (b) the "past-future" use of would (i don't know if there is a real name for this) are different; they aren't the same...

Re: Galileo did not invent the telescope, but on hearing

I thought that after "but" you should put a clause. I'd like to know why the structure Subj + verb, but + present participle is correct in this case and a similar structures are not correct such as in this GMATPrep sentence nah. you aren't parsing this correctly. the -ING participle here ...
