Re: By pressing a tiny amount of nitrogen between two diamonds

The writer was not only mortified by her mistake but was determined to correct it in print. --> INCORRECT Sorry,Ron. But I think my question should be in this thread. Because I'm quoting the sentence you said at the 12th floor in this thread. I'm asking whether " was not only .... but was...

Re: According to a survey of graduating medical students conduct

the biggest problem with D is its poor idiomatic construction. you don't say 'it is X times MORE likely that A will happen, RATHER THAN B'; 'more' is supposed to go with 'THAN', and is incompatible with 'rather than'. the proper construction would be 'it is X times more likely that A will happen th...

Re: By pressing a tiny amount of nitrogen between two diamonds

Ron, great explanation about the detection of "simply", which caution me to attend to details. But I guess that's difficult to detect in real test with short time, not to mention as a non-native speaker. Paleontologist Stephen Jay Gould has argued that many biological traits are not the pr...

Re: According to a survey of graduating medical students conduct

In the sentence here, "4 times more likely" is buried in the middle of the clause It is ... that xxxx will happen , so the other half needs to be an entire statement that will parallel the statement that xxx will happen. Ron, you hit the nail on the head. What makes the sentence of compar...

Re: According to a survey of graduating medical students conduct

Thus, the following sentence(I just made it up randomly. It has nothing to do with the original prompt.) is incorrect : It is nearly four times more likely that minority graduates will plan to practice in socioeconomically deprived areas than to work for multinational pharmaceutical corporations . ...

Re: According to a survey of graduating medical students conduct

Ron and Joe, thank you very much for clear explanation. I have to say, as a non-native speaker, I'm kind of frustrated when you say "it's just not the way that the English language says it". Because it implies that I have no weapon to tackle such sentences as " It is nearly four times...

Re: Tough SC: Approved April 24, 1800, the act of Congress that

the modifier comma + "making" is illogical, because it would have to modify "was approved on {date x}" -- thus implying that the act made these things happen as a result of the date on which it was ratified. that's nonsense -- these are two different facts about the act, (a) the...

Re: SC COMPARISON

Ron or Joe, sorry for opening this thread again. After reading all your previous posts, I still don't know the correctness of the following expression(partly because you haven't given a clear "yes or no" answer to the original poster.): Wild animals have total fat less than THAT OF LIVESTO...

Re: Relative Pronoun Modifier

Sorry to post here, I know asking questions from OG is somehow crossing the line. Because I couldn't find a compelling explanation to this question anywhere on other forums, I have to put it here. I'm trying to ask it (OG12-118) carefully. [---] ------> I know the above sentence is correct, since...

Re: SC COMPARISON

You can only write "X is less than Y" if X and Y are mathematical quantities. E.g., The average weight of fitness models is less than that of bodybuilders . Correct, since "weight" is a mathematical quantity. If X is something that exists in a smaller quantity than Y, you CANNOT...

Re: According to a survey of graduating medical students conduct

If the sentence starts out with "It is more likely that...", then you can't break up the clause starting with "that", just as you wouldn't want to break up any other construction that is one of the two things being compared. Unlike the idiom above, this one requires no knowledge...

When "while" is used to indicate a contrast, it should ideally be used to indicate a contrast between two simultaneous things. (If you're contrasting things in different timeframes, there are plenty of other contrast signals that can be used instead.) Ron,I"˜ve looked up the word "...
