Re: The organic food industry

Hi Ron.. I have a query.. We have generally seen "and also" is wrong in most questions as it is redundant. I have only seen it in the right answer choice of one question. there's nothing redundant about "and also". "and also" is redundant if it appears in the same sent...

"Protecting xxxx" describes why the shields were essential pieces of equipment, so it describes the preceding clause. Comma + ___ing doesn't necessarily have to give a consequence of the preceding clause (though that is one way in which it's often used). As long as it gives some sort of d...

a is out because 'ing' cannot come after possessive form of noun not true. there are plenty of constructions in which that's ok. example: he took annette's growling dog out for a walk. no problem there. the issue here is just that "labor's unqualifying support" is just ridiculously awkwar...

ankur -- this may be a regional distinction -- perhaps english is structured differently in the country where you were educated -- but a single construction "twice of ..." would always be considered incorrect in american english. the only way you're going to have "twice" next t...

Hi sunruiapply, Not quite. The problem is that "with" can introduce either a noun or an adverbial modifier. Let me give you some examples: "The girl with long hair is my sister." Here I am using "with" as a noun modifier--"with long hair" is describing "...

in this case, you can't use "..., twice as many as...", because that's an appositive modifier. appositives must modify some noun that comes IMMEDIATELY before the comma, which in this case would have to be whatever figure is twice whatever other figure. since no such figure is given, you ...

Re: Although energy prices have tripled in the United States

actually, all of your eliminations have some element of truth but are all flawed in some way: 1) the word "having" is not always wrong, but it is in this case. make sure you know why.. 2) you should not get rid of answer choices because other choices have idioms you like. get rid of them ...

Re: Although energy prices have tripled in the United States

Not a grammar issue in (D). (D) says that "Few people ... are not making fuel efficiency a priority". Which means that most people are making fuel efficiency a priority. That's precisely the opposite of the desired meaning. hi ron i have some question about choice B and C. 1>Whether th...

Hi Ron: I eliminated DE because of ambiguous meaning. just take D as example. *Meaning1: creating images of Buddha accounted for much of the local artisans’ creative energy, and also (did) constructing and decorating the temples enshrining them In this interpretation creating images parallel to con...

Hi Ron... if we resolve the subject - verb problem of E i.e. each one of which dates..., will it become right in this sentence? Also if we have this modified version, is it better than A? Please comment that still wouldn't be ideal, since you would still have a "which" modifier after the ...

the previous poster has most of the right ideas. i may be reiterating a lot of what's in that post, but, perhaps, in clearer language. SUBJECT-VERB AGREEMENT you see "include" vs "includes". this is a singular/plural split, so you know that you should look for the subject of thi...

Re: painted caves at Lascaux and Altamira

hi - this is really important: if anything BEFORE the verb CAN BE the subject, then that thing will be the subject. this advice mostly applies to sentences like this one: "A is/are B". specifically: in the sentence "noun1 is/are noun2", noun1 is the subject. in the sentence &quo...

Re: On account of a law passed in 1993, making it a crime punish

Dear Manhattan instructor, I have a small question about the choice A. =================== If I changed the choice A to 'On account of a law passed in 1993, making it a crime punishable by imprisonment for a US citizen to hold...' Is it acceptable?? In my opinion, it's OK. 'making it a crime punish...

"Twice that you have" doesn't work. Consider the following examples, each of which could be the second half of a comparison: ...twice the amount that you have ...twice the quantity that you have etc. With "that" (= pronoun) in there, you'd need ...twice that that you have . That...

Re: Marconi’s conception of the radio

In (b), you've actually got an ambiguity. "A tool for private conversation" could be intended to describe "a substitute for the telephone", or just "the telephone". At the end of the day, though, this isn't really an ambiguity, because both interpretations ultimately l...
