Re: The parachutelike membranes of Africa’s scaly-tailed flyin

Ron

On the GMAT, is "X rather than Y" more preferred to " X instead of Y"?

Thanks

Re:

Copied from correct answer D "Because of a law passed in 1933 making " I'm confused about what are the rules for whether "making" in above sentence is a verb or participle. While attempting this problem, I thought it's participle and eliminated it ah yes, the dreaded "becau...

Re: Is X^2 greater than X?

Ron

Referring to statement 1 here,

x^2 >1

If we take positive square root on both sides :

Mod x > 1

Isn't Mod x > 1 equivalent to:
(a) x > 1, and
(b) x < -1

Don't we have to prove that in this current question, case (b) is not applicable ?

Thank you

Re: A CIRCLE IS DRAWN WITHIN THE INTERIOR OF A RECTANGLE

Hi Ron

I got the same question in my CAT exam today and I spent a lot of time to figure out the question and the approach to do the same. Barring the 2-2.30 minutes golden rule, how much time would you suggest one must take to solve such a question?

Thank you

Re: Re:

that's a bad construction, but the reasons are largely irrelevant to this exam. the only thing that might be relevant is 'the walking of Tony'. this sort of construction DOES NOT refer to an action performed BY tony. rather, this is something done TO tony (tony is the object ). if someone walks a d...

Re: Each of the 25 balls in a certain box is either red, blue or

Hi, I tried to solve st 2 as shown below: P(white) - P(even) = 0.2 P(even)=12/25 ('coz there are 12 even nos in the box) so, P(white)= 0.2 + 12/25 = 17/25 P(white) + P (even) = 12/25 + 17/25 = 1.16 which is incorrect and hence B is out. Is the above understanding correct? you can't just add the pro...

Re: Is W greater than 1?

Isn't square root of statement 2 => W > 1 ? sqrt(W^2) = W? or +W and -W? When these sorts of issues arise, the best way to build intuition is to investigate . I.e., plug in specific numbers, and watch what they do . In the case of "w^2 > 1", it should only take you a few plug-ins...

can someone please explain...how did they quickly rule out that statements 1 and statements 2 were insufficient? when i encounter such a question, i tend to plug numbers which takes up quite a bit of time. is there a way to think about such inequality questions? thanks. when you see "< 0&qu...

Re: Discussion of greenhouse effects have usually .....

Hi Ron, Just a quick question here regarding the "THE" before "discussion" in D and E. Is the usage of "THE" correct here? My first judgement was A,B,C were incorrect because "Discussion" - as a singular noun - can't be used alone here, either "The / A d...

Is x an even integer?

From the GMATPREP test: (I searched for this question in the folder but I could not find it. In case any of you can find an existing thread on the same, I would request you to share or else lets discuss this question here.) Re: Is x an even integer?

also, this... and we saw in statement 1 when y is odd integer then x is odd integer. when you reached this conclusion ^^ you should have realized there was a mistake. if y is odd, then (y + 5) is already even. thus it doesn't matter whether x is even or odd, since x(y + 5) is going to be even no ma...

Re: Is W greater than 1?

RonPurewal Wrote:'w < -1 AND w > 1' is clearly impossible, so that leaves just one possibility.

Got it! Thanks!
