Re: Comma + Like, After the clause.

(ii) Sam hates Toronto , like Adam Incorrect . You're correct that this version also has two meanings. Like the first option, this option is still comparing clauses, so it would be correct to use AS instead of LIKE along with some clarification. Greetings. I do not have the new edition, so I am bas...

Re: Comma + Like, After the clause.

Thank you for the response. I really do need to get the updated “All the Verbal” guide. The “Greg Louganis” examples were copied from the prior Manhattan Prep guide before “All the Verbal” was released (I didn’t exactly make that abundantly clear lol). The examples I quoted from the prior guide neve...

Re: A study of food resources in the North Pacific between 1989

I’m not sure if I can link to the question, even though it was discussed previously on this thread (*see* “Stacy’s Rule”, first page, about 3 or 4 posts down). I will attempt to make my own sentence with respect to the guideline mentioned in hopes of relaying my question. ‘Following diminishing work...

Re: Comparison clarification

Greetings Emily, Regarding the comparison construction written above, I have a doubt I hope you can clear up. “In 2010, X killed 200 pigs, which is fewer than the number killed in 2006.” Since the referent noun phrase of “which” is “200 pigs,” for ease of understanding I will substitute the phrase a...

Re: Since 1986 when the Department of Labor began to allow inves

Greetings Whit, I hate to be “one of those.” However, is it not the case that the GMAT prefers the construction: “forbid (noun) TO DO (something)” ex: “The law forbids citizens to drive without a license” However, if the object is just the thing forbidden and the sentence is not written to forbid an...

Re: In an area devoid of volcanic activity, a discovery has been

Is the following another point of elimination in version B? The construction “like it had…” is used to try to speak in the conditional/hypothetical “voice.” (Conditional Subjunctive Mood) The correct construction should be: “(The team) found a fragment that seems AS IF it had come from……” The prepos...

Re: A study of food resources in the North Pacific between 1989

A much overdue and belated thank you! ‘Following diminishing work hours available to employees, the union staged a strike.” The union did not stage the strike “following work hours.” The union staged a strike following the DECREASE in work hours made available...would you say that this is a proper e...

Re: Annual stock holders meeting...

Beautifully stated! Hello JbhB682, I have two things to say about this. First, and most importantly , this is not a clear issue that will help you to make good decisions. If you ever find yourself trying to choose between two answer choices like the ones that you list, try to find something else. Se...

Re: The spectacular disintegration of a comet last year in full

With respect to the use of the Present Perfect in answer (E): “Last year, __________ the spectacular disintegration of a comet has provided new insights…..” Since the opening modifier (‘last year’) is essentially setti...

Re: By pressing a tiny amount of nitrogen between two diamonds

Here's what our All the Verbal strategy guide has to say about this idiom: NOT . . . BUT RIGHT: She DID NOT EAT mangoes BUT ATE other kinds of fruit. She DID NOT EAT mangoes BUT LIKED other kinds of fruit AND later BEGAN to like kiwis, too. A tomato is NOT a vegetable BUT a fruit. A tomato is NOT a...
