Word Problems Book: Statistics page 90, Check skill #10

by franalej Thu Sep 19, 2013 11:53 am

The question asks for the possible range of the following set of numbers {2, -1, x, 5, 3}

The answer given is only 12 or -8, assuming x is the extreme lower value or the extreme higher value. But, how about if :
-1<x<5? The then range would be 5 - (-1) = 6, so 6 is a possible range value too, isn't it?

Hey Frana,

The question actually asks for the values of x if the range is 13. It isn't asking for the range.

P.S. Side note, when titling question, please name the guide and the page number. Thanks!

Thanks t, I see my mistake. So for the set numbers given x is either the highest or the lowest, right?

P.S. I did mentioned the problems position, however, I am using the Kindle version of it

Hey Frana,

Exactly right. X could either go above or below, as long as the total range remains 13.

P.S. No worries on the titling. I can always change them if need be. : )
