Brainstorming examples for the issue essay

by roysidhartha1612 Wed Sep 18, 2013 10:48 pm

I was out of ideas while writing the essay. I faced this situation while I was writing my issue tasks quite a number of times though not always. The topic sometimes id way out of my scope and I am unable to fill the essay with more supportive examples.

So please suggest of what can be done in a situation where I have managed to gather just one or two examples, but I have to write a whole essay supporting those examples. I mean a way to fill the essay with fodder points, which will get an average score. And also on a way to present my essay if my view is moderate not specifically supporting any side. May be a brief template that will give me an idea.

Hey Roysid,

I'm not sure I understand your question. Are you saying you struggle to come up with three points/examples, or you don't know how to talk about them?

There's no secret here, so I'm not sure what to tell you. Once you have an idea that supports something, you have to describe it, then describe how it supports your thesis, then make sure you've done whatever the specific essay directions asking you to do with that example. That is plenty right there. Where is this going wrong for you?

P.S. This message was posted 3 times, just FYI. I deleted the other two.

I would like to know that, if I get a topic that's out of my scope or I have little idea about the topic, and I am unable to support a side strongly then what should be my move within the thirty minutes time, so that I don't end up writing very less.

Hey Roysid,

Well, basically, you can't have that happen. The prompts are very wide and general. There are always plenty of things to write about. If you can't find any, unfortunately you're going to end up getting a low score. There's no way around that.

But there's always plenty of material to draw on, I promise! Use your life, use history, use current events, use a totally fictionalized study (yes, you can make things up entirely, as long as they sound realistic; GRE will not care at all). You've got lots of options!

Dear Tommy Wallach,

Your suggestion helped. In the real exam I drew up a few things from my life experiences etc, I think it worked. Got a 4 in the writing section. hope its sufficient.

Thanks a lot.

Great work! Glad it helped!

P.S. And yes, a 4 is generally just fine for the vast majority of schools and programs.
