Algebra strategy guide doubt

by atirpetkar10 Thu Nov 07, 2013 2:09 am

Hi manhattan team,
On Page 65...in problem set.. First question...
If 4x-12>=x+9,which of the following must be true?
A) x>6
B) x<7
C) x>7
D) x>8
E) x<8

Answer given as is option A

From question stem we will get, x>=7.... So option a seems to be correct..
But my doubt is, since it is not given whether x is integer or not, option a can go against question stem for x=6.1....

Since from question stem we know c can be greater than or equal to 7...then c and d are true for all the values of x

Please let me know if I missed anything....
Thanks,
Atir

Hey Atir,

You're mistaking the question.

If x > 7, then x > 6.

That's all the question is saying. You're reversing it:

If x > 6, then x > 7

This is NOT true (because x could be 6.1, as you stated).

But that's not what the question says. The question TELLS you that x is equal to or greater than 7. THUS, it is also true that x is always greater than 6.

Hope that helps!

Hi Tommy,

Thanks for your reply. OK I get it, I was thinking with respect to options and not as per question stem as you pointed.... So basically question tells x is greater than equal to 7..... Option a satisfies for all the values of x.
Thanks for your help Tommy.

Regards,
Atir
