Why don't I subtract the sides facing one another such as on p. 75, #4? Thanks.

Hey Suzanne,
These are totally different questions. In one, we're backsolving from a surface area that we already know. In the other, we already know the sides, and we're trying to find the surface area. So it's not that we "can't" do what you're suggesting, but it wouldn't help us find the answer, because we don't have a surface area that we're starting with.
