5 lb book - page 460 , Q39 Q40 stumped!

by divya.1024 Wed Dec 11, 2013 4:13 pm

the question asks about numbers having a sum between 1 and 2. However, I assumed it has to be a +ve sum and hence arrived at answer choice I only. When I checked the answers it says about choices I and V. Can anyone please explain!

Also, Q40 .. I really did not understand the logic behind solving it! :(. Is using a calculator an easy of solving it? Help needed

Appreciate your response

Hey Divya,

I don't think you're understanding the question. You can't have a sum for just ONE thing (a SUM is multiple things ADDED together). So you can't just pick 1. You have to pick two answer choices that, when added together, result in something between 1 and 2. Make sense?

-t

P.S. This probably means you didn't understand what the other question was asking either. They wanted you to pick 3 of the 4 things, multiply them together, and end up with a result that was less than -1. You definitely want to pick the bottom two, because both of them are already less than -1. Then you want to pick II instead of I, because it's the least likely to create a product that's between -1 and 0 instead of less than -1. Hope that helps!
