Geometry Study Guide (Kindle 4th ed) Hard Q 19

by Chocopie Thu Nov 06, 2014 12:41 am

I think the wording of question 19 of the hard practice problems is a little confusing.

The question asks if line n goes through the origin, which statement is sufficient to show that it has a slope "greater than" 1.

Response B and C both indicate a line with slope of 1. The question asked for a slope “greater than” 1, which to my understanding is a strict inequality rather than a non-strict inequality (i.e. 1< and not 1<=) If the original intent of the question was a slope of “at least 1”, then B and C are correct. However, if it is “more than 1”, then neither B nor C are correct and therefore none of the statements are sufficient.

Hey Chocopie,

It's using the logic of something called "sufficiency." The question doesn't ask IF the line has a slope greater than 1. It asks if you KNOW if the line has a slope greater than 1.

For example, if I ask you: "Which of the following pieces of information is sufficient to determine if Dan is cool?"

Then these are the same:

1) Dan is cool.
2) Dan is not cool.

Both of them allow you to answer the question. It doesn't matter that they give different answers. The only thing that would be insufficient would be to say:

1) Dan has a leather jacket.

Now, I don't know if he's cool, because the jacket may or may not equate to coolness.

Make sense?
