I don't see how a critic could argue B after what was said in passage, because if a public devotion to a way of life is a necessary condition for becoming a professional and a doctor is a professional, then how can there not be a required ethical or public act? And indecently aren't doctors required...

Thanks, this really makes sense. If an author has firmly established his point, it would be redundant to argue that any point any further, leaving the author with the sole option of discussing the potential criticism against the argument he has already substantiated.

Perfect, it makes sense now!!! When the author says,"physicians are honored because of their profession," he gives an indication of how society generally treats them. Noah, thank you so much. This question was driving me crazy.
