Algebra Guide Book # 1, 2 Questions

by divinedookie Tue Oct 07, 2014 9:29 pm

Hi, I hope this message finds you well.

My two questions pertain to the Algebra Book, one concerning question # 10 on page 154 and question # 9 on page 162.

I carefully read and reviewed question 10 on page 154 (and the answer on page 158. I do not understand how the formula p + (n-1) is established.

Pertaining to question # 9 on page 162 and the corresponding answer, is there a difference between a minimum value of f(x) and extreme value of f(x)?

I understood question #9 to mean that if we solve for f(x) as given by the equation, what is the lowest integer x can be. When solving for the equation I get (x-1) (x+5) = 0, and thus, the minimum value x can be under the given equation is -5.

I do not understand what first and foremost an extreme value of x is as is stated by the answer on page 167, and how the extreme value can be implied by the way question #9 is framed.

Thank you very much. :)

Hey Divine,

You're going to hate me, but could you please repost this as two separate questions? We try never to do two at once, because it's really confusing for people who are looking for stuff. Also, could you please title your posts with the book, chapter, and question numbers? This way, other people can use the post.

Thanks! I promise I'll respond once they're posted!
