Breaks on Practice GRE Exam

by tennis.fan Wed Aug 24, 2011 4:43 pm

Hi,

I just took a practice Manhattan revised GRE exam and I noticed that there were only 1 - minute breaks between each section. Is that the case on the actual GRE or is there a 10 - minute break somewhere in between? Thanks.

Hi Tennis.fan,

Great question! There will indeed be a 10-minute break in the middle of the new GRE. We will be updating our tests accordingly now that we have experienced the real new GRE. Please let us know if you have any further questions.

Best,
Taylor

A question about the breaks: I see that on the screen with the instructions, the timer does not show. Does this mean that in between sections, we can just leave the computer on the instruction screen and take a longer than 60-second break? What is the limit to the amount of time that you can stay at the instruction screen?

i like your resort action :) to win more time. I know ETS practices read aloud method and automatically switches windows if you don't do that yourself. This method is practiced also in Ibt.

As Taylor said, we are updating our tests, so there may not be a time limit on breaks right now on the practice tests. Of course, our practice tests also have a pause button that you can use during the sections, which of course the real GRE does not!

So, as for the real GRE, which is much more important:

Breaks are timed very strictly, and your exam can re-start without you if you don't get back into the test room. You need to go to the bathroom, drink water, etc., in LESS than the 10 min allotted, because it also takes a minute (maybe more if there are other students coming back at the same time) to sign back in (you have to sign in and sign out every time you leave the testing room).
