How much does it cost you to not answer a question?

by ali.lapinsky Sat Jul 07, 2012 4:08 pm

Does it hurt you more, less, or the same amount as answering the question incorrectly?
Particularly in regards to the last question or two if you are running out of time, should you take a guess?
thanks!

Hi, this is Jen (instructor).

Good question! There is no guessing penalty. So, do not leave any regular multiple choice questions blank (since it's so easy to just click a random answer even if you have only a second).

For questions where you type in a response or for "select all that apply" questions, or vocab questions with multiple blanks, your chance of randomly guessing correctly is pretty low (for instance, on a Sentence Equivalence, which has 6 choices, 2 of which are correct, your chance of randomly guessing correctly is 2/6 x 1/5 = 1/15). So, for those question types, answer if you want, but it probably won't affect your score.

Again, however, for any select-one multiple choice, including Quant Comp, definitely guess!
