One of the definitions of mettle is disposition or temperament. The others imply a positive meaning though so I'm wondering if the "disposition" definition can also be used in the negative sense.
The only important definition of mettle is "one's ability to deal with difficulties or face a demanding situation in a spirited and resilient way." I know of no negative interpretations of the word.
