mGRE timing

by vlad4 Sun Feb 10, 2013 12:43 pm

Hi Manhattan team,

I have noticed that I am running out of time when I solve GRE practice tests (quant in particular). I have heard that Manhattan GRE math questions are more advanced; thus the tests might require more time than the real GRE test.

Can anyone confirm this?

Thanks

Hey Vlad,

I certainly wouldn't count on that. I haven't heard that our tests are significantly harder than the real one. That being said, you need to take an official practice test (through ETS) and see how that goes. If you have the same problem, you know it's on your end; if you don't have the same problem, there could be a difference in the tests. HOWEVER, make sure that you get the same difficulty on the second section. If you got a hard difficulty second section on our tests, and then you get a medium difficulty second section on some other test (because you did less well on the first section), that would make the second section seem much easier/faster.

Good luck!

Thanks for the advice, Tommy.

I guess I will have to try taking the ETS practice test in order to find out whether I have timing issues.

Hey Vlad,

Good luck with it. Remember to benchmark as you go (i.e. you should be a quarter of the way done with your time when you've finished a quarter of the questions, halfway at halfway, etc.), and you should be fine.

After taking 2 paper and 1 Powerprep official ETS practice tests, I can confidently say that Manhattan GRE practice tests (quant part) do require more time than official tests.

Now, that doesn't mean that Manhattan questions are harder per se, but it definitely means that Manhattan questions are more time consuming.

On my quant I scored as follows:
ETS paper 1: 164 (8 mistakes)
ETS Powerprep 1: 166 (3 mistakes)
ETS paper 2: 165 (3 mistakes)

During my Powerprep test I got 20/20 on first part and 17/20 on the second. I had 3 and 5 minutes left, respectively.

My Manhattan quant as follows:
M1: 164 (9 mistakes)
M2: 161 (10 mistakes)
M3: 166 (8 mistakes)
M4: 164 (9 mistakes)
M5: 166 (10 mistakes)
M6: 163 (14 mistakes)

I ran out of time on almost every single Manhattan test. So if other people are having time issues on Manhattan quant part, calm down because the real thing won't be as time consuming.

PS: Sadly, I can't score higher than 166 :(

Hey Vlad,

If you wanna give me your full name, I'd be happy to look at your MGRE tests and see if I can shed any light on the strange discrepancies between the PowerPrep tests and ours. Just FYI, I would never trust a paper test, but still, I'm surprised by the differences between our tests and the PowerPrep (not in terms of score, which looks to be right on target, but in terms of wrong answers).

Thanks!

So basically all that timing consuming practice tests are showing off good result, right Vlad? :)

Hey There,

Though I didn't get back to Vlad in time for his test, he has posted a really impressive and thorough description of his entire process, both studying and taking the test. You should read it!
