"People who make decisions based on emotion and justify those decisions with logic afterwards are poor decision makers."

Taking decisions based on emotion and justify those decisions with logic afterwards is equivalent to doing something wrong and then explaining yourself that in some or the other way you are right, just to lessen the guilt.

Good decisions makers are those who cover all their bases before making a decision, that is they apply logic before they think about emotions. Emotions makes a decision prejudiced in a way that it makes one choose the easier way around an issue rather than the one that is better in the situation. For example while buying a car one would set his budget before going out actually looking to buy them, but once you reach the showroom the salesman would entice you and your emotions of buying a much more expensive car. Now buying the car in your budget would be logical and help you have a planned future, but if one gives in to his emotions and buys the expensive car he would contrive later when he has financial problems. He could always explain himself that it was the right decision as one buys a car not everyday but that still does not make his situation any better now.

Emotional decisions more often than not are ones that are taken keeping in mind the comfort level and not the validity of the decision, one will always find a way to put logic to bolster the decision taken but that does not make the decision anymore feasible than it was.

Some might argue that logical decisions do not entertain the emotional or human side of the situation and is just black or white, but logic applied correctly can always bring about the ideal gray area required. On the other hand emotions are often obscure and do not correspond to what is ideal for us.

It can be comfortably said that 99% of the times one needs to think logically first and then maybe bring emotion into the picture because taking decisions based on emotion and justifying those decisions with logic afterwards results in bad and jaundiced decisions.

"An international development organization, in response to a vitamin A deficiency among people in the impoverished nation of Tagus, has engineered a new breed of millet high in vitamin A. While seeds for this new type of millet cost more, farmers will be paid subsidies for farming the new variety of millet. Since millet is already a staple food in Tagus, people will readily adopt the new variety. To combat vitamin A deficiency, the government of Tagus should do everything it can to promote this new type of millet. "

essay:-
The article does not specify weather the new seeds will contain all other nutrients apart from vitamin A, in the same quantities as it was in the older seeds, it may be possible that the new seeds may have lower quantities of other nutrients and cause a new type of deficiency. It is also not specified if the farming process for the new seeds is similar to the old ones, that is the new seeds may require more irrigation and less sunlight or any other specifications. It is mentioned that millet is a staple food in the nation of Tagus but that does not not necessarily mean that every single person has it, so it may happen that those who do not have millet will still be suffering with vitamin A deficiency. It is mentioned that the government should do everything to promote the new millet but does not specify how apart from subsidizing and also are the subsidies provided enough to bring down the cost of new millet to the old one. Apart from being rich in vitamin A, it is not mentioned if the new seeds have any side effects. Finally, the article talks only about vitamin A but the nation of Tagus being impoverished may also have other deficiencies which have not been addressed here.

Hey Aakash,

If you read up on the forum, you'll see that we don't grade essays on here. Good luck on your test!

I know, was just trying my luck..:D

But it would be really nice if you guys start evaluating the essays in the practice exams...princeton already does that. Just a suggestion apart from that I have loved manhattan so far.

Hey Aakash,

I understand! (Of course, to get the TPR essay grading, you'd have to take a TPR class, and do you really want to do that to yourself?). Just be aware, when you take a class with us, we always offer to grade your essays, so it's only if you're just going with books that you don't get any comments. : )
