Quant Question on Prac Test 6

by jendu Sun Feb 16, 2014 2:32 pm

I have a question in regards to the second quant section of the 6th practice test. It is one of the graph/data questions and asks "If a customer wants to choose perennials from Plant Nursery A that are either white or can be used in containers, what is the minimum number of perennials that must meet the desired criteria?"

There are 22 white perennials and 30 perennials that can be used in containers. I chose that the answer was 22 because there are 22 white perennials, but the correct answer is listed as 30 because that would fit the criteria of the question.

I am confused because the question says white or can be used in containers, not white and can be used in containers. Can someone help to clarify? Thanks!

Hey Jendu,

You seem to be confusing the words yourself! Your answer would be if it were an "AND" question (there are only 22 that are white AND can be used in containers). But the question asked for OR, which means that we will be happy with either one. Because there are 30 that fit in containers, and 22 of them COULD be white, we know there are 30 that are either white OR can fit in containers.

For example, imagine the only animals I have are three puppies, one of which is brown.

If I ask "How many animals do I have that are either puppies or brown?" the answer would be three. Because there are three that are puppies.

Hope that helps!
