by jalshri Thu Nov 15, 2012 3:59 am

hii , i took gre but i got 142 in english and 152 in maths , i am really disappointed with my marks . I was not expecting good marks in english and 142 is just ok, but for maths i was hoping for 165 but i didn't get it .Now i am going to take gre again and I have only 1 month for preparation. . I have already done nova and manhattan maths books. Can any one please tell me books for maths, which can help me for getting a score of 165 and above. Also now i am targeting 150 for english pls tell me best books for english as well as for maths.

Hey Jalshri,

You should not need any more books than you already have (and perhaps the official GRE book). If you are still not scoring high, it is not because of a lack of questions to practice on, but because you have yet to master the material in those books. I would recommend running through the books AGAIN, and hold yourself to very strict rules. For example, you are not allowed to get a single question wrong in a group of drill questions. If you do, put a star next to it, signalling you have to run it again in a couple days. If you can do all the questions in all the books, the test itself should be a cakewalk.

Also, be realistic about expectations. Hoping for a huge score increase in only a few weeks is not impossible, but it is also not likely. That being said, a month is a fair amount of time, assuming you can really dedicate yourself to preparation. Good luck!

I too did not score well, however I haven't taken a standardized test in like 20 years! To prepare for the exam (I took May 10th) I studied an hour a day every day for about 4 months. Yet during the exam, I found that I was rushing and in some cases had to leave questions blank. Being that I work full time please advise for effective studying and time management?

Thanks,
Haleema

Hey Haleema,

Just keep working. There are only two aspects to studying:

1) Time spent studying
2) Openness to utilizing new techniques

If you are spending lots of time studying, then the only problem can be #2. A lot of times, students read about some technique or means of organization in our books, then end up doing things their own way. Often this is because their way works on many practice questions. But the methods recommended in our books (as an example of one resource) are the ideal methods for all questions of a given category type, so they should be learned and used.

In short, do not expect your score to increase if you are doing everything the same way you did it before you started studying.

Other than that, it's just a question of putting in the time. Also, make sure you take enough practice tests, so you can practice your timing (not rushing).

Good luck!
