Revised GRE Scores: The Full Monty

Taylor Dearr —  November 2, 2011 — 37 Comments

It’s the moment we’ve all been waiting for. Scores from August administrations of the Revised GRE are now available online!

A few days ago, we reported that ETS had started to convert Old GRE scores to the new scale and we started to speculate about when the new scores would arrive. Apparently, they were right around the corner.
Yesterday, ETS released a table containing the percentile ranks for the new scale. Today, they followed up by releasing the first batch of Revised GRE scores nearly a week ahead of schedule. But what does it all mean?

  1. The percentiles make more sense – ETS has done a pretty good job of pinning the 50th percentile right around the middle of the score range at roughly 151 for Verbal and 149 for Quant. From there, the scores are roughly patterned after a normal distribution. The extremely skewed percentiles of the old GRE are a thing of the past.
  2. Verbal is still the tougher section of the two, but the math is harder than it used to be – The high end of the verbal scale still indicates that Verbal is the more challenging of the two sections; either a 169 or 170 on Verbal will land in you in the 99th percentile, while only a perfect 170 will do so for quant. However, the math is no cakewalk. A perfect score on the old GRE would land you only a 166 on the new scale. ETS has made good on its promise to make the math more difficult (this will help them challenge the GMAT in terms of B-School relevance).
  3. 750-800 Math estimates can end up all over the place – 750-800 was the best quant estimate that you could get on the revised GRE, but today that range can mean a score as low as the 85 percentile (based on scores we have heard so far). The fact that a range of 6 score values on the old test (750, 760, 770, 780, 790, 800) translates to at least 10 different score values on the new test (162, 163, 163, 164, 165, 166, 167, 168, 169, 170) shows just how out of whack the old quant scale was. Unfortunately, it also means that receiving a 750-800 estimate on your quant doesn’t tell you much about what your official score will actually be.

These are our big takeaways from today’s data. It is still a small sample and we will no doubt be updating you as further information trickles in. As I have previously mentioned, Manhattan GRE will be in attendance at the ETS score explanation webinars coming up in two weeks. We will be sure to report everything that we learn there as soon as we learn it. If you’d like to share what your scores estimates turned into today, please email us at studentservices@manhattangre.com.

  1. The 750-800 quant range actually spans 159-170 inclusive.

  2. What do you think about a 740-800 quant score??

  3. Hi Jorge,

We haven’t heard much about that range yet. I would guess it will be toward the high 150s or low 160s, but we don’t have enough information to give you a confident answer. We will look into scores in that range once we get more reports.

    Best,
    Taylor

  4. Do you think these ranges given at the end of the test will continue to hold up as more data is release or correlated? What I mean is, let’s say my range for verbal taken last week was 730-800, will that necessarily correspond to a 168-170 and 98th-99th percentile as more tests are taken? Thanks!

  5. Hello everyone,

I received my GRE scores last night.
The score ranges that I got on the day of exam were:
    Verbal GRE Score Range- 500-600
Quants GRE Score Range – 750-800

and the final score according to new scale is:
    New Verbal – 154/170
    New Quant – 168/170

I am looking for masters in computer science. What are my chances of getting into universities like Rutgers (new brunswick),university of minnesota (twin cities).I have two years of work experience in software development.
    My academic profile :
    B.Tech – 68%
    High school- 74%
    Matriculation- 83%.

  6. I have a question…

How much on avg could you expect your score to be scaled up? Lets say for example your raw score would be a Verbal: 164, and Quant: 166. How different would the scaled score usually be?

    Thanks

  7. i have recieved scores of 145 for verbal and 147 for quant.
how can i compare it to old pattern score?
is my score an average one?

  8. ugh, gross. i take it tomorrow afternoon.

  9. navya, you can convert your scores using these charts:

    http://www.ets.org/s/gre/pdf/gre_guide.pdf

  10. … and by charts I mean tables

  11. I made my gre 2 weeks ago and got 750-800 in quant, Im terrified with the news… I could end up getting a 159!!!
Worst part is, I have to wait until december the 1st to find out…

  12. Help From any one,

I have received scores of 144 in verbal, 151 in quantitative…now, the question is would the universities change their GRE score criteria considering the difficulty of new pattern or do they simply stick to these score conversion tables??

  13. If I’m planning on entering graduate school January 2013, is it to my advantage to take the GRE sooner or later?

    • Hi Ann! Scores are good for five years, so I’d say get started sooner — that way, if you have trouble with anything (including test anxiety), you have time to take it more than once. Just so you know, the GRE limits you from taking the exam more than once in a 60 day period.

  14. 540-640 V
    750-800 Q

    Actual score??

    157 Verbal, 77th percentile.
    159 Quant, 82nd percentile.

this sucks. Guess you can add a new lower bound for those of us who were 750-800 range on the Q.

  15. Sad Face,

Those were exactly my ranges… I am really nervous about my actual score, but I won’t get it until december… too late for a retake.

  16. My score estimate was

    V 610-710
    Q 680-780

    What I actually got:

    V 159 (590) 84%
    Q 154 (690) 67%

HOW DID I GET A 590 IN THE VERBAL WHEN MY ESTIMATE WAS ABOVE THAT?

I don’t care about the quant score because I’m applying to English Lit programs and they don’t look at the quant score. But I feel like I got screwed over in the verbal.

  17. I thought my scores weren’t gonna be ready until december, but they are…

    My score estimate was

    V: 540-640
    Q: 750-800

    What I actually got

    V: 156 (72%)
    Q: 165 (93%

    My academic profile
    Bachelors in math: 9.68/10
    Masters in economic theory: 8.58/10

Could I apply to a top 10 university?

  18. My 750-800 quant 750-800 verbal was converted to Q170 V170. My AWA was an embarrassing 3.0 (11th percentile)

  19. My score estimate was

    V 650-750
    Q 680-780

    What I actually got:

    V 161 (620) 89%
    Q 155 (710) 69%

Even in my case same thing as ‘unfair’ has happened.I got 620 in Verbal, whereas the predicted one was 650-750 . How ?

I’ll be applying to Bio-medical sciences(immunology) , so it would be of great help if someone could shade some light on how my quant score would have an impact. And based on my score ,what are the colleges I should apply ?

  20. I received my scores early as well. My range given at the test center was:

    V – 750-800
    Q – 630-730

My actual scores are 166 Verbal and 156 Quant. According to the tables provided and the scores given at the testing center, my verbal score is less than what was predicted. Is this normal? Are most people receiving lower verbal scores than the range given?

  21. Dazed and Confused November 25, 2011 at 7:55 pm

My verbal also ended up being below the predicted range. In test day my predicted range was 600-700, and I ended up with a 590 (84%) or (159-or whatever it converts to). My quant score was pretty accurately reflected by the score range on test day-although my actual was on the higher side of the range. But I am totally confused about the AWA scoring. I got a 4.5 (horrendously low) and that was a 77%. But as far as I know, before August, a 4.5 was about a 47th percentile. I’m just so confused-I do not understand what this means-is a 4.5 now considered a better score than it once was? Thoughts?

  23. Is a 169 verbal 154 quant, 5.5 considered in the ball park for an ivy league public policy course?

  24. Hi Just Wondering,

For grad schools, every discipline has a different set of admission criteria (unlike business school or law school that are a bit more standard in how they consider applicants). Looking at your scores, your verbal and AW are both excellent, and the quant is just below the 70th percentile, which may be a bit low, but not terrible. I would look into the historical data on acceptances at your program. If their public policy programs place a higher emphasis on verbal scores, then along with strong components in the rest of your application you should be in good shape. I hope this information helps!

    Best,
    Taylor
